New hotel in Windermere

We have acquired another great property – a wonderful hotel on Lake Windermere – Langdale Chase.

Itis a Grade II Listed country house hotel with a stunning location overlooking the lake and fells, it is an iconic property, I think probably the best in the Lake District, and we have exciting plans to develop it further.

Situated on the main road between Windermere and Ambleside, it is set in six acres of landscaped grounds on the shore of Lake Windermere and has 29-en-suite guest bedrooms, a purpose built 24-bedroom staff accommodation block and a 15-bedroom former staff house. It also features a lake house with eight bedrooms, a boat house, with an amazing bedroom above it, and two jetties.

Langdale Chase has been voted to have the best view in Britain and the outlook over the Langdale mountain range, on the edge of the lake, is sensational. Later in the summer we will learn if the Lake District has been successful in its bid to become a Unesco World Heritage Site – we certainly hope so.

The site was originally bought by a businessman from Yorkshire who had the intention of building a retreat there however he died before the building began and his widow made it her permanent residence and in the late C19th built a larger house instead. It became a hotel in 1930 and it has been in the ownership of the current family since the 1970’s.

It has a great reputation and huge potential.

It is a family-run hotel that has been passed to the next generation and now the current owners want to retire. They are particularly pleased to be selling it to Thwaites, another company with strong family values and they were attracted by the fact that we have a great reputation for developing properties in a sympathetic manner and looking after the teams that we take on.

Like Middletons, this is already a very successful business and we will continue to run it as it currently is and Mike Vincent, who is currently Operations Support Manager for our hotels, will work four days a week as Integration Manager. His role will be to welcome staff to Thwaites, so they can understand who we are and the great work we do to give our customers a great experience when they visit us.

If you have any questions about the day to day operations of the hotel, please contact Mike.
